Copycat: Dark Chocolate & Strawberry “Love Crunch” Granola

Love crunch granola with strawberriesra

Re-creating grocery store foods is one of my favourite things. It’s like a challenge. And I love challenges. As was the case with Love Crunch Granola– It’s filled with dried berries, chocolate, and coconut. More of a treat than a breakfast, but delicious just the same. And quite addicting.

My best friend K, as well as my father, have both always loved this granola.  K and I’s dads are good friends, so whenever my father would visit their house, he would go into their cupboards and steal the granola to munch on.

In conclusion – we owe K’s family a lot of granola… and it was going to get expensive. So to reimburse them for all the granola my father has “borrowed”, I made my own, Copycat “Love Crunch” Granola. And with less sugar.

Print Recipe
Serves: 6 (1/2 cup servings) Cooking Time: 30-40 min

Ingredients

  • 2 1/2 cups rolled oats
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened flaked or shredded coconut
  • 1/2 cup honey
  • 3 tbsp coconut oil
  • 2 tsp vanilla
  • 3 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon

  • 1/2 cup chocolate chips
  • ~1 oz freeze-dried strawberries or mixed berries (can swap dried strawberries if desired, use ~1/2-3/4 cup)

Instructions

1

Preheat the oven to 300 degrees F.

2

Mix together the oats and coconut.

3

In a larger bowl, stir together the honey, coconut oil, vanilla, and cocoa powder, and ground cinnamon.

4

Add the dry ingredients to the wet and stir until well coated.

5

Empty ingredients onto a baking sheet. Bake for 30-40 minutes, stirring every 10 minutes or so until golden.

6

When the granola is cooled, crush some of the freeze dried berries (I used a plastic bag and a rolling pin to powderize). Stir in the chocolate chips as well as the whole and crushed freeze-dried berries.

7

Store granola in an airtight container. Serve with yogurt and fresh strawberries, and toasted coconut.

Awesome ‘hack’. Tastes just like the store brand. I didn’t have berries, so substituted 1/2 cup of slivered almonds and it came out fantastic! Thank you!!

Loved it! We chopped some almonds in place of the coconut and added 1/4 cup whole flaxseeds. Delicious! We used Trader Joe’s freeze dried strawberries, but would love to know what brand others use.

Awesome, I love that stuff. I was Googling a copycat recipe and landed here ๐Ÿ˜‰ Can’t wait to try to make my own. I will use Simple Truth Freeze Dried Strawberries from Kroger and the 72% Cacao Chunks too.

I made it vegan by using maple syrup instead of honey and it worked great! Thank you for the recipe!

    Hi!

Just what I was looking for! I only have sweetened coconut though and am trying to not go out (you know- the whole pandemic thing). How would I modify this recipe? Thanks so much!

Hi Julia! You could just decrease the honey by a couple tablespoons. When decreasing honey, sometimes I add in some juice or egg whites to replace the liquid so it continues to bunch together! Happy baking ๐Ÿ™‚

Could I use dairy free โ€œbutterโ€ spread in place if the coconut oil?

The granola is delicious but for the dehydrated strawberries I have 4 oz seems like way too much. How many would you say you use in cups? I ended up using about 2/3 cups which weighed less than one oz and it was plenty.

Hi Jen, thanks for the comment! I will have to update my recipe :). I originally had made this recipe with dried strawberries, and when I was finally able to get freeze-dried, I changed it but must have forgotten to update my amounts! I have on my notes that I used 1 package (1.0 oz) of freeze-dried, so you were 100% correct with your measurements. Glad you enjoyed!

Mmmmm. This is really good! I doubled the recipe but used only one 1.2 oz bag of freeze dried strawberries and it still tasted pretty spot-on. Thanks for sharing!!
